Storage Solutions for Memphis Apartment Dwellers
May 6th, 2008 by Memphis Apartments
There are few Memphis apartments large enough that storage is never an issue, but with a little creative planning and some minor changes, you may find that there are plenty of places to store “stuff.” Take a look at our list, use what you can, and then see if you can’t come up with some ideas of your own.
· The coffee table. There are two things to consider here. First, a coffee table isn’t an absolute necessity and second, it doesn’t have to be a traditional coffee table. A trunk is a great solution to this quandary. Not only can you store things inside the trunk, a little searching will often pay off with a great deal. To add to its allure, a trunk will often give up its own appearance in favor of your décor with nothing more than a little paint. Even an ugly trunk can be dressed up with nothing more than a slip cover. Not big enough? Use it as a base with a glass top.
· Storage ottomans. The furniture industry had moved away from ottomans but the good news for Memphis apartment dwellers is that they’re back. As a rule, these are large footstools with a hinged top so that there’s a minor amount of storage space inside. This could be a perfect answer for storing a youngster’s toys in the living room or for those video games. The stool, positioned near the television, could very well become a favorite seat for those playing games in front of the television and the stool becomes a handy receptacle.
· Stand-alone closets. Closets are almost always an issue and an armoire could be the solution. You’ll find they range in price from a couple of hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the quality, size and appearance. If simple storage is the goal, the cheaper units will serve well. They may come unassembled, making it easier to get the unit into the Memphis apartment, and may be disassembled when it’s time to move.
· Drawers in the closet. If you have the opposite problem – plenty of closet space but not nearly enough drawers – consider a small chest of drawers that will fit sideways into the closet. This could work even if there are clothes hanging above the closet.
· If you’re looking for a place to store a blanket or two, or even a sleeping bag in between camping trips, take a look at your couch. While it’s not exactly “empty” space, you may find there’s sufficient room to spread out a blanket (or two) under the cushions of the couch. If you have an older couch, you may even find that the addition of the blankets make it more comfortable. Remember that you’ll need to air them occasionally so that there’re ready for use in the case of company or colder weather.
· Shelving. Shelves are very versatile and can be used for any number of things. Look at the top shelf of your closet. Is there room for another above that? A shelf above anything is a great idea for displaying things that you just can’t bring yourself to get rid of but don’t often need access to.
· Storage units. While they’re often expensive, a storage unit may very well be the best answer. You may have one allotted as part of your monthly Memphis apartment rent or there may be some place in your building set aside for tenant storage. Be aware of the security – or lack thereof. You should also be certain who is responsible for loss of your property if your unit is flooded, vandalized or otherwise damaged.
