Preventing Memphis Apartment Kitchen Fires

Kitchen fires can be deadly in Memphis apartment complexes. These are almost always accidental fires. Generally speaking accidents can be avoided. There are several precautions you can take to prevent a kitchen fire in your Memphis apartment. These precautions should be taken every time you cook in your kitchen regardless of your level of cooking expertise.
There are basic precautions you should take. Have the telephone number of your local fire department posted visibly in your kitchen. Make sure your smoke detector works. Never remove the batteries from your smoke detector for any reason. Make sure your kitchen exhaust fan works properly.
Some people like to keep a small fire extinguisher in their Memphis apartment. If you decide to get an extinguisher, know how to use it. If you can’t figure it out, visit your local fire department and ask them how to use the extinguisher in case of fire. Also find out when you should not use the extinguisher but call the fire department instead.
Try not to store anything near your stove. This may not always be possible in Memphis apartments. If you have to use cabinet space above your stove, at least make sure that none of the items you place there are flammable. Keep all material such as dish rags and pot holders away from your stove. If you have a window in your kitchen, secure the curtains so that they do not move, especially if your stove is nearby.
You should always stay near your stove anytime a burner is turned on. It only takes a second for a fire to start. In a few more seconds your entire kitchen can become engulfed in flames. If you are using more than one burner at a time, make sure all of the handles are out of the way so that someone walking by the stove can’t accidentally run into a handle causing a spill that can start a fire.
One of the most dangerous ingredients you use when cooking is oil. Never leave oil cooking on a burner. You should keep an eye on your cooking anytime you use oil. You should gradually heat oil. This will prevent the oil from boiling out of the pot onto the stove or a nearby flammable material. Never pour oil into a hot pan. Instead, pour the oil into the pan and then place the pan on the burner.
Grease is another danger in kitchens. Grease generally collects on stove tops, in ovens, and microwaves. You should clean all surfaces after each use. Use grease cleaners to make sure all residue is removed from the surfaces. This includes your countertops as well.
It is always a good idea to have a rubber mat in front of your stove. Kitchens can become very warm. If you have an exhaust fan, use it. It may not remove all of the heat and moisture in the air, but it will help. However, your floors can become slick with heat condensation. The rubber mat will prevent you from slipping near your stove.
Be careful about your cooking attire. Never wear open shirts or shirts with flowing sleeves. Tight fitting clothes are safer in the kitchen because there is no material that can drop into hot liquids or catch on pot handles. Use a cooking apron to contain your clothes as close to your body as possible.
Always make sure your stove and oven are turned off before leaving your Memphis apartment. If you have children, periodically check your stove to make sure they have not turned it on. Kids like to play with buttons and knobs so closely supervise them when they are in or near your kitchen.
Memphis apartment kitchen fires can be devastating because Memphis apartment kitchens are often small-contained spaces. It does not take long for a spark to spread throughout the entire space. Take the appropriate precautions to minimize your risk. Be smart in the kitchen and you won’t have to experience a fire in it.
