Managing Pets in Memphis Apartments
Aug 5th, 2007 by Memphis Apartments
Before you decide to bring Fluffy into your Memphis apartment, there are several things you should consider. Primarily, is your pet right for your Memphis apartment? And, is your Memphis apartment right for your pet?
Always review your lease before getting a pet. Many leases strictly prohibit pets. Violating this rule may result in your eviction. If pets are allowed, you may be required to pay a pet deposit before you bring your pet in to your Memphis apartment. Some pet deposits are refundable while others are not. This means that if your pet deposit is nonrefundable and your pet does no damage in your Memphis apartment, you still will not get your pet deposit back when you move. A typical pet deposit is around $400.
The reason you need to provide a pet deposit is because some pets are destructive. You may not believe your pet will damage anything in your Memphis apartment because Fluffy did not have any problems at your last Memphis apartment. However, moving from one place to another can be stressful for your pet. A pet that feels unsettled may become aggressive. If your pet streaks through your Memphis apartment, he is likely to break some of your belongings or knock items into the walls. Wall damage is often expensive to repair. Damaged carpet will have to be replaced.
Pets can also be noisy, particularly dogs. Your pet deposit does not allow you to waive your responsibility to control noise in your Memphis apartment. If your pet makes constant or loud noise, your neighbors will begin to complain sooner or later. They may complain directly to you at first. Eventually the complaints will get to your landlord. If you are unable to control your pet and the noise he makes, you may be asked to leave.
You do not want large animals in your Memphis apartment. You have limited space in an Memphis apartment. It is easy for large animals to accidentally knock things over and break them. In addition, your lease may limit the size of a pet. Size is usually determined by weight. Large animals may not be comfortable in an Memphis apartment. They need lots of exercise and can be playful. If your Memphis apartment includes a private yard, your pet will be most appreciative!
If your pet is able to go outside because you have a small yard, patio or balcony, keep the outside of your Memphis apartment neat. If you have a pet that spends time outside, keep their food dishes clean. Replace pet toys on a regular basis as germs collect fast on them. This is particularly important if you allow your pet to use the same toys indoors and outdoors. Do not allow pet clutter to accumulate. If you have no outdoor space available, take your pet for a walk around the neighborhood or to a nearby park.
Even if your lease allows for pets, you still need to manage your pet, in and out of your Memphis apartment. Keep your Memphis apartment, clean at all times. If your pet sheds hair, you should plan to vacuum at least once daily. Stain and odor removers are essential if you have pets! Never let your Memphis apartment accumulate a pet smell. If you live in such a Memphis apartment, you too will smell like your pet in no time at all.
It is your responsibility to manage your pet. Living in a Memphis apartment does not mean you cannot have pets. It just means there are additional rules you need to follow to keep your pet safe and your Memphis apartment clean. Always be considerate to your neighbors who may not like animals or may even fear them.
