Living with a Roommate in Memphis
Feb 15th, 2007 by Memphis Apartments
If you have never lived with somebody before, living with a roommate can be a challenging situation. Especially if this is your first time living alone and away from home. Here is how to resolve the difficult Memphis apartment issues.
Â
In most Memphis apartments, the rooms are not of equal size. This can be a challenging situation if your roommate feels that they’ve got the short end of the stick, because they were not offered the master bedroom. This situation isn’t hard to resolve, as all you have to do is charge them less rent for the smaller room. Usually, this works out fine, because there is often one person who is trying to save money and the other person has more possessions and needs more room.
Â
Another common problem with roommates involve paying the bills. Who pays what when can be solved with modern technology. Setting up automatic payment for the bill will take the hassle out of remembering to take why and the bills will be paid on time, so other roommates are not required to make up for somebody not paying their bills. Another idea is to consider opening up a checking account in which everyone pays towards the bills. The bills can then be deducted automatically from the account as they come in. This keeps individuals from being specifically responsible, but the group as a whole.
Â
Other concerns may involve general relationship around the Memphis apartment. One roommate likes heavy metal, while the other roommate can’t miss a soap opera and the other likes to smoke. If your Memphis apartment is smoke-free and for the courtesy of the other roommates, the smokers should smoke outside. This may also save you in the long run should you move out of the Memphis apartment and the landlord claims that there has been smoke damage to the Memphis apartment. Do not play your music too loudly. Use headphones for your music unless everybody in the Memphis apartment agrees to listen to the radio. If domination of the television is a problem, everyone should consider bringing their own television for their room. This will make living together more harmonious.
Â
Housekeeping is also an issue that may need to discussed. Have a meeting with each other in determining who doesn’t mind doing what. Each person will then be responsible for those daily chores. If nobody likes to clean the house, you may consider having everyone chip in on a housekeeper. You may also have specific trash days and dish days assigned. Roommates will be able to pick up the swing of things and begin performing their duties like clockwork.Â

Following a few simple guidelines will help you to live together peacefully and hopefully reduce any quarrels that you may have. It is important to remember that you are going to have some arguments because living in close quarters can be difficult with people of different personalities and desires. Be sure that you respect each others privacy and comfort and you should be able to live together in peace.
