Now that you have signed the lease for your first Memphis apartment, you are ready to get going. But you are already feeling overwhelmed. You just want your Memphis apartment set up and ready to be lived in. Here are some tips to manage your first move.
Make sure all of your boxes are marked to indicate contents. Since you know your apartment’s floor plan, write on each box the room in which it should be placed. Plan to keep valuables or breakables with you during the move. Everything else can go with the movers.
Mark boxes that you will need immediately in a different color. These boxes should contain items you use daily such as hygiene, work clothes, and medicine. You can also place your tools and moving supplies in these boxes so you can use them as soon as you move in. It can be frustrating when you have to go through several boxes to find one item. Keep all necessities together.
Check out a moving company before hiring them. Ask for references and contact them. You can easily do this during the month prior to your move. You should feel the company is trustworthy before you hire them. Review their policy on damaged or lost items. Keep a copy of their proof of insurance on hand during the move.
After you have identified your moving company, contact your utility and telephone companies to have service turned on in your name. If this is your first Memphis apartment, be prepared to put a security deposit down on your utility and telephone services. Contact your local cable provider if you plan to have cable in your Memphis apartment.
Go to your local post office and complete a change of address form. In addition, you will need to notify your banking institution and major credit card providers of your move. This can usually be done on-line. If you have an internet service provider, update your mailing information.
On your move day, organize boxes as they arrive. Place them in the appropriate room. Place furniture where you want it, starting in the farthest room and working your way to the front entrance. Do not start unpacking until everything has arrived. This will eliminate some of the initial clutter.
Once the movers leave, you are ready to start setting up your apartment. Start with the room farthest away from the entrance. Situate the furniture as you want it. Then, one box at a time, start emptying contents and putting them away or where they belong in the room. Neatly stack your boxes near the doorway. Keep a garbage bag handy to discard of your trash. Have a storage bin on hand to place items you no longer wish to use in your new Memphis apartment. You do not have to decide what to do with these items yet, just separate them from the things you are using.
After you are finished with that room, move in to the adjacent room. Follow the same process starting with the furniture. Clothing can take the longest time. You might want to place clothes in the appropriate closets and drawers just to get them out of the way. Once you have finished the room, go back and organize your clothes. This will help you to quickly empty boxes. It also helps you determine if you have space left over or need to store any items.
Follow this process until you have finished each room. You should have a stack of empty boxes, several garbage bags, and storage bins when you are finished. You can either discard the empty boxes with the garbage bags. Or, you can ask friends and family members if they can reuse the boxes. If they cannot, ask your landlord if he can use them. Discard your garbage bags appropriately, usually in nearby garbage bins. Find places for your storage bins in your apartment or elsewhere. Make sure the bins are clearly marked indicating contents.
If you follow this process, you can quickly and easily move in to your first Memphis apartment. Your first move does not need to be hassle. Have fun with it!
