How to Make Sure You Get Your Memphis Apartment Security Deposit Back

You resent having to give a security deposit in order to move into your Memphis apartment. But you look forward to getting it back when you move out. The purpose of the deposit is for the landlord to be able to afford to fix damages to the Memphis apartment beyond normal wear and tear. If you took care of the Memphis apartment while you lived in it, you should get the full deposit back.
Your lease should specify how your security deposit can and cannot be used. Some landlords do not allow you to apply your deposit towards your last month of rent. Do not assume your landlord will make exceptions to this policy.
The best thing you can do is to maintain your Memphis apartment as you live in it. Fix damages as they occur. You can do this yourself or report damages to your landlord. Your lease probably details when you should report damages to your landlord. If you decide to wait until you move to make repairs, fix as much of the damage as possible.

In some states, if your landlord does not return your deposit or provide a detailed accounting of why he is not returning your deposit within thirty days after you vacate the Memphis apartment, you can take him to court and request he pay you twice the security deposit amount.
