HOW TO DISPLAY ARTWORK IN YOUR MEMPHIS APARTMENT

Displaying artwork may seem like a simple enough task. You find it, bring it to your Memphis apartment, choose the location, measure the area to find the right spot, and then secure a screw or nail into the wall. It’s as easy as that, right? Well, that depends on what you really want. Yes, you certainly can follow traditional hanging methods, and you may be perfectly happy with the result. On the other hand, you may wish to approach hanging your art as something more—thinking of displaying art as something of an art in itself.
Â
For instance, do you have a piece of artwork you love that you want to highlight in a special way? Try thinking beyond single pieces and instead consider creating an artistic grouping. If you have a Victorian-style print, how about grouping it with a few plates, tole trays, a small shelf, or a pair of sconces?
 Â
You should also carefully plan groupings and test them before you commit. Before you begin hanging the items, lay the entire grouping down on the floor, in the specific configuration you have in mind. See how the items work together, how the colors look, whether the group seems symmetrical or perhaps too narrow or too wide for the space you have to work with. The intent is to make your mistakes on the floor, not on your walls. Move items around until you have the perfect grouping on the floor, then get to work hanging it all up.
 Â
If you need inspiration or help to create a grouping, look around your Memphis apartment and try matching up different items until you have an arrangement that strikes your fancy. Groupings can include a few items with something in common, matching items, or completely separate items that have a theme or something that can tie them together and cause the grouping to make sense. For instance:
 Â
- Matched identical items could be a matched set of four framed vegetable prints in the same artistic style, in matching frames.
 Â
- Items with something in common could be a variety of family photos, all displayed in matching (but not necessarily identical) black frames.
 Â
- Separate items with a theme could be a rose print, a watering can, and a section of picket fencing—all different items that pertain to a garden theme.
 Â
Whatever you decide, artwork brightens and adds character to any Memphis apartment home.
