Fire Safety and Your Memphis Apartment

Fire safety is probably the last thing that you are thinking about when moving into a Memphis apartment. However, it is probably the most important thing that you should consider. Here are a few things you can do to protect youself and your family.
Smoke detectors - Every Memphis apartment should have a smoke detector, whether it is part of an alarm system or standalone battery powered unit. The battery powered smoke detectors should be inspected and tested twice monthly to make sure they are functioning properly.
You may also want to place additional smoke detectors on the ceiling near the bedroom areas of your Memphis apartment so if a fire starts while you are asleep, you will have ample time to react. Since smoke rises, all smoke alarms should be mounted high on Memphis apartment walls or ceilings.
Additionally, choose a location in your Memphis apartment for your alarms that is well away from the path of steam from the bathroom or cooking vapors from the kitchen to avoid false alarms, which can be a nuisance. It is also recommended that you have interconnected alarms which can be installed wirelessly. With interconnected alarms, if one alarm is set off, the connected ones are activated as well.
Besides a smoke alarm you should also have a carbon monoxide detector in your Memphis apartment, which will alert you to the presence of the odorless, tasteless, and invisible silent killer, carbon monoxide. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are available almost everywhere in all types of stores like Home Depot and Lowes. Some fire departments also offer them for free, some even with installation included.
Also you should have an evacuation plan for you and your family with a common meeting point, should anyone be separated. Finally, make sure you know where the individual alarms are located in your building and how to operate them in case of an emergency.
