DECORATING YOUR MEMPHIS APARTMENT KITCHEN
Apr 2nd, 2007 by Memphis Apartments
If you spend a lot of time in your Memphis apartment kitchen, you might not want to stop at just the necessities. You might want to just keep going until you’ve created a truly special place to serve as the heart of your Memphis apartment home.
If your Memphis apartment kitchen is small, one way to start your kitchen decorating endeavors is to look up. What do you see? Consider these way-up-there ideas:
· If your cabinets do not meet the ceiling, you probably have some over-the-cabinet space for displaying treasures or even for storing seldom-used items.
· Hang a pot rack from your ceiling to display your cookware when it’s not in use.
· Hang drying flowers and herbs from pegs mounted on your wall near the ceiling. (Or make this look permanent by stenciling such a scene in the same spot.)
Many people with ample space in their Memphis apartment kitchens also like to add a desk to catch bills, correspondence, and other personal papers. Although some Memphis apartments (particularly newer ones) have the luxury of a built-in desk area, you don’t have to give it up if it wasn’t there when you moved in. Look for small desks at yard sales, flea markets, and places like The Container Store and IKEA. You can also purchase grid systems (also available at The Container Store) for your wall and hook on little receptacles for everything from stamps to eyeglasses to mail.
If you don’t have the budget for major kitchen redecorating, you can still enhance your kitchen decor easily and inexpensively. For instance, if you have a tile backsplash, you can add some beautiful tile appliqués to dress it up (they’re available in a variety of colors and designs). New drawer pulls can also make a fun and interesting statement, and they’re now available at crafts and home improvement stores in many different styles and colors. (You can take them with you to your next Memphis apartment. So hang on to the original cabinet and drawer pulls so you can put them back before you move out!)
As you gather decorating ideas and projects you’d like to tackle, you’ll probably notice that several tools and basic necessities seem to be needed often. This is precisely why it’s a good idea to hit your local discount store in search of these decoration essentials.
Some tools and accessories you may want to pick up include:
· Hot glue gun. This is the indispensable tool that’s the crafter’s equivalent of duct tape.
· Good scissors. Be sure to keep them sharp, and don’t try to cut anything too hard since they can get damaged in the process.
· Sheets. Snatch up super cheap irregulars whenever you spot them. They can become shower curtains, slipcovers, tablecloths, and many other decorative items later on.
· Baskets. You can paint them, fill them with treasures, and put them everywhere. They’re as wonderful to look at, as they are useful.
· Acrylic paints. Hit craft stores when they’re on sale, and stock up on small bottles for as little as 50 cents each. They last a long time and you’ll use them eventually.
· Paint markers. If freehand painting intimidates you, paint markers are a great option. They provide more control than a paintbrush and come in a huge variety of colors.
· Fabric. Check the remnants table for big markdowns at your local fabric store. Hang on to them and eventually the perfect use will appear.
