There’s just all this “stuff” that you know you’ll need the moment you throw it away, and so you keep it. If it were only one or two items, it’d be no big deal. But add up the sheer number of items, and the “Memphis apartment stuff” of most people becomes “Memphis apartment clutter.” While it’s a problem for anyone, clutter for Memphis apartment dwellers can become a serious issue. There are some ways to deal with all that stuff.
Start by considering what you really have to have. Try sorting your clothing by season. Push all the out-of-season clothing to the back of the closet, but then rotate the in-season clothes. If there’s something that you continue to skip over in favor of something else, or something that you know you didn’t wear last season, toss it or give it to a charity. If the clutter has gotten out of hand, make a sweep through your Memphis apartment, taking time to deal with all rooms of your Memphis apartment – including that closet and those drawers that have simply become places to deposit “stuff.”
After you par down the stuff you really don’t need, it’s time to decide how to deal with what’s left. Look for creative ways to use anything you want to keep. Have that great T-shirt from the rock concert of 1987 starched and framed to become decorative wall art. Stand those plates you use only at family gatherings along the top of the kitchen cabinets rather than having all those artificial plants that do nothing but gather dust. This same idea should hold true for the top of the refrigerator – a place many people put all the stuff that has nowhere else to go. Take time to take everything down and find it a home. Then make a system for that space – and stick to it. This tendency to drop things somewhere is a chief cause of the cluttered look.
Another way to deal with Memphis apartment clutter is to hide it. This is a dangerous method because it’s easy to allow “stuff” to remain in a drawer for years simply because it’s not out in the open so that you see it. Consider decorative chests instead of decorative tables. The tops serve the same purpose but magazines, seasonal items and other stuff that you just can’t part with can be stored efficiently.
Filing cabinets are a must, whether you have a home office or just a place where all the mail is dropped. Take time on a regular basis to deal with it – all of it. This takes discipline that many of us just don’t possess but it’s vital to eliminating the constant clutter of junk mail. If you have a shredder, make certain that it’s handy and that shredding is done each time you check the mail. Never lay the junk mail on a table with the intention of dealing with it later.
Sometimes, the visible clutter is what gains the most attention, but the underlying clutter is really the culprit. If you never have room to put all the clothes away, it’s because you have too many unused clothes in the drawers or closets. Take time to pull those things out and dispose of them somehow.
Can’t stand the thought of just getting rid of all this stuff? Have a sale. Memphis offers garage sale sites or your city area ordinance might allow sidewalk sales. Check with your city representative to find out what’s available. Remember to price your items to sale, unless you really do want to keep it after all. In that case, it’s just time to figure out how to overlook the clutter.
